Geocache Description:

The small village of Salthouse nestles between a high ridge above, and the salt marsh towards the North Norfolk Coast.

Salthouse grew up on the edge of a tidal inlet, separated from the open sea by a shingle beach. Five hundred years ago the the village’s fishermen could climb into boats along what is now the Coast Road and navigate westwards through salt marsh creeks to , to the open sea beyond Blakeney Point.  In later years attempts were made to reclaim the marshes for grazing but for long periods the area was a large shallow lagoon known as Salthouse Broad.

Nowadays the marshes are drier and the sea is half a mile away beyond the shingle ridge.  This ridge is natural feature thought to be from cobbles and gravel left after the last Ice Age.  For the past half   a century it has been pushed into a regular shape by bulldozers.  Despite this work the village remains at risk from floods such as that of 1953 and much more recently in December 2013.

For nearly 100 years , Randall’s  Folly on Great eye was  a well known landmark. The building was demolished after the 1953 flood made it dangerous and the last remnant of Great Eye, which lay between Little Eye  and the Beach Road car park, disappeared in the 1966 flood a reminder of the relentless advance of the sea here.

This cache can be found along the Salthouse Sculpture Trail.  A footpath runs from the centre of Salthouse but there are additional access paths at various points along the coastal path.  This cache is placed on the same path at the Salthouse Sculpture Trail Cache and so could be done in conjunction with that.  As you walk to this one take in the  fantastic views across the marshes and out to sea.  You can literally see for miles and miles!

The path was dry at the time of placing the cache but I imagine it will be muddy and slippery in the winter so please wear appropriate footwear.

You are looking for a medium sized clip-lock box hidden next to the footpath.  There is room for trackables and small swaps.  Please bring your own pen as I took the one out of the box to write the title on the geocaching label and forgot to put it back!
