Geocache Description:

The least obtrusive of the 2,500 footers, an unavoidable obstacle with an absence of attractive or interesting features, even the path avoids the summit. We have Wainwright to thank for this less than glowing testimony of Sail. Maybe the history of the name could be slightly more uplifting? Sadly not - the word 'seyla' is Old Norse, meaning 'mire' or 'puddle'. Perhaps Sail's greatest claim to fame is the classic line in the Wainwright guide, "It is possible to drop dead on this route but not to get lost." Mmmm.

At least it's grown since Wainwright passed this way - 6ft to 2,536ft

So if all this hasn't put you off, the cache is typical of me - a small box, containing no more than a log book and pencil, and hidden behind a rock. If your hoping for tat you'll need to go elsewhere. There is room for trackables.

Cache placed with the permission of the National Trust.

The photograph of the summit cairn was taken by Roger Hiley. They host a web site - 'http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk - which is a comprehensive and well illustrated fell walking site for the Wainwrights and more. I have added a link at the top of the page.

Information about the meaning of hill names is gleaned from Diana Whaley’s book ‘A Dictionary of Lake District Place-Names’ - maybe not exactly bed time reading, but great for dipping into occasionally!
