This is one of six remaining hides placed in Curt Gowdy State Park by Fhazzel along three sections of hiking/biking trails (Cliff Hanger, Canyons, and Blue's Cruz) that run along the north edge of Crystal Reservoir. The trails afford some nice views of the reservoir, interesting rock formations, and surrounding hills. If you are on a bike, these trails are rated as "Advanced". If you're on foot, the trails are pretty easy with just a few spots of moderate elevation change. Wear decent shoes as the trails consist of abrasive, loose granite. Also, if you leave the trails you will encounter a good deal of prickly pear. When we placed these caches, we walked a total round trip distance of about five miles.
I imagine that this trail could be traversed with snow on the ground with the aid of snow shoes or skis. However, some of these hides will be difficult to find under deep snow. Also, there are a few segments where it could be quite treacherous if you lost the trail.
Dogs are allowed here, though, according to park regulations, they must be leashed and may not enter the water. Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen - you will find few places to hide from the sun. This is a fee area (resident day use - $4.00, resident overnight - $10.00, non-resident day use - $6.00, non-resident overnight - $17.00). Suggested parking is at the Volin Trail Head.
