In 1992, a local woman was praying near the lake when a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to her. The image of the Virgin Mary remains in the oak tree at the spot, and thousands of faithful have since visited the shrine that was built there. It's the story of a modern-day miracle, if you're so inclined, or just a cool spot in a beautiful county park.
You are looking for a small cache hidden a short distance off of the trail well away from the shrine. You do not need to disturb the shrine or even go near it to find this cache. The trail will take you past the shrine, along a wooden pathway around the edge of the lake for a beautiful view of the area, and then on to the section of the trail where the cache is hidden.
To get there, park in the main parking lot at Pinto Lake County Park. (Parking is free. Hours are dawn to dusk daily.) Follow the trail around the edge of the soccer field and continue until you see a trail marker with a salamander (to the right) and a heron (straight). The trail to the right is the most direct route to the cache, but to see the shrine and the lake, you will need to go straight. The trail will loop around and bring you back to this spot. It's no more than 1/4 mile round trip from here.
Most of the trail is easy, but the section where the cache is hidden is somewhat steep. You don't need to go far off the trail or touch poison oak to reach the cache. The cache is big enough for small items only.
