ENGLISH
This cache is part of a serie of mystery caches about Lucky Luke comics. You don't need to have the books to find the cache.
We are in Texas, in the middle of a war against the Apache warriors.
Lucky Luke is escorting a convoy of supply wagons crossing the Apaches land, travelling to Fort Canyon.
Colonel O'Nolan, who commands the detachment of cavalry in charge of the convoy, is however very stubborn !
Fort Canyon road passes through a dangerous canyon, but despite the near certainty of an ambush, it is unthinkable that the proud cavalry of the United States of America could be intimidated by a handful of redskins.
As expected, the convoy is attacked while crossing the canyon.
Lucky Luke is determined to stop this war.
He manages to be accepted as an ally by the Apaches. Under the pretext of helping them to reinstall the stones, after each attack, without getting tired, he getsthe Apache to tie the rocks with ropes.
However, Lucky Luke plans to shorten the ropes before the next attack so the convoy can pass the canyon safely.
Can you help Lucky Luke to shorten the ropes ?
As you can see in the pictures, the canyon cliffs are very steep : the floor at the top of the canyon is horizontal to the edge of the cliff, and then it drops vertically to the bottom of the canyon (so the ropes are horizontal between the pole and the edge of the canyon, then they descends vertically into the canyon).
Each rope is attached to astake driven into the ground 3 yards 2 feet from the edge of the cliff, and the Apaches need 5 yards 5 inches of rope to tie the rope on the stake and tie the rope to the stone (including the rope that goes around the stone). The stones have a diameter of 1 yard.
The depth of the canyon is 150 feet but the stones must stop 9 feet 8 inches above the bottom of the canyon to avoid touching the riders and to allow Colonel O'Nolan to lift his sword.
What length of rope should Lucky Luke use to attach each stone?
The canyon measures 1/10th of a mile long, and there is a rope every 5 yards 2 feet. Indian ropes (hand-woven by the squaw of the tribe) are heavy : 50 ounce of rope measures 4 feet 5 inches.
What mass of rope Lucky Luke will he have to handle: D (in stone)?
Length of each rope : A yards B pieds C pouces.
Total mass of ropes : D stone
Numbers will be rounded to the smallest integer.
