網走監獄は、 過去に網走刑務所で実際に使用されていた建物を移築・修復して保存公開している野外博物館です。
獄舎内ではいたるところにマネキンを配置し、収監されている囚人の様子が見てとれます。
中には網走監獄を脱獄している様子を模している囚人のマネキンもあります(笑)
（網走監獄の脱獄は日本一難しいと言われていましたが、実際に脱獄した囚人は数名います）
また、昔の監獄だけでなく現在の網走刑務所の中を再現したコーナーもあり、更には施設内にある食堂では網走刑務所にて出されている食事を再現した「監獄食」を食べることもできます。
網走監獄に入るには入場料が必要ですが、キャッシュは入場料を払わずとも探すことができます。
但し冬場は雪に埋まってしまうかもしれません。
