This is a great spot to watch the commercial airliners approaching and arriving in Taiwan. GZ is just about 900 meters from the start of the actual runway, but only meters from the first set of ALS (Approach Lighting System). You will be able to see the running strobe beacon lights if you are here late in the evening and through out the night. The big jumbo jets fly right above your head at a height of roughly 70 meters. The sound of jet engines are extremely loud.
On 31, Oct, 2000, Singapore Airlines Flight 006 was scheduled to take off from runway 05L to Los Angeles, however, the flight turned to Runway 05R which was still under maintenance during a typhoon night. It caused one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Taiwan history. Runway 05R has been converted to taxiway, the new Runway 05R is now on the other side of the airport. Runway 05L is the busiest runway in Taiwan. During normal operation this is the main runway for China airlines flights.
If you line up your sight with the strobe beacon lights, the cache will be right in front of you. The cache is tied to the razor wire fence with a fishing line.
Please be extremely careful with the sharp razor wire when retrieving the cache, proceed at your own risks. Try to confirm location of the fishing line by using a mirror or with your camera before taking any further actions. If you are uncomfortable with the risks to retrieve this cache, take a photo of the cache, and a photo of you or your gps at gz and email them to me for a found log.
Airliner just before landing, the ALS is not on yet.
It's getting dark, caught the first strobe beacon light of the ALS in action.
