This cache is located near the Manawainui gulch and bridge. When the bridge was in repair back in the 1980’s there was a detour that ran mauka of the bridge, below Homelani Cemetery, and down into the gulch and through the stream bed and out the other side of the bridge. There were no lights on this old road. It was the source of many spooky stories!

(1) flying spirits – mysterious balls of fire seen by one informant flying through the air on a warm summer night
(2) apparitions of a large, white pig
(3) horses rearing and throwing their riders, and cars stalling, especially if carrying fish or pork
(4) apparition of a man sitting in the back seat of the car and smoking a cigarette, as seen in the car mirror by the driver as the car reached a certain rock with a large crack in it
(5) a girl riding home with her two brothers on the back of her father’s truck. When they got to the gulch, two other vehicles were stopped by the flooded stream. While waiting the girl sat with her legs dangling off the edge of the truck. She felt someone or something pull off her brand-new shoes. She screamed ! Her family searched with their lights, but found no trace of the shoes. Later on, she saw a long red dog go up to the stream to cross. Too far to jump the dog stretched out his body until his two front legs were on the far side of the swollen stream and the two hind legs on the near side. He then contracted his body, bringing the two back legs up to the far side of the stream and then he continued on his journey. This was witnessed by several people and it is believed that this was the dog of the legend for whom Ilio Point was named.
