Geocache Description:

Welcome to Belfort, CA

Home of California's Highest Wherigo

The ghost town of Belfort was a small gold mining camp on the south-eastern slope of Mount Patterson that dates back to the early 1880’s. According to an 1888 State of California Mineralogist’s report, some of the mines in the area included Montague Mine, Angelo Mission Mine, Kentuck Mine, Frederick Mine, Longstreet Mine, Lilly Mine, Deep Creek Mine, and Tiger Mine.  At least one mining company, the Monte Cristo Consolidated Mining Company, issued 100,000 shares of stock in 1887 for $10 per share.

The Patterson Mining District is roughly described as lying southerly and easterly from the summit of Mount Patterson and lying northerly of Frying Pan Canyon and westerly of Sweetwater Canyon. You can access this area from either the west off Highway 395 via Burcham Flat or the west off Highway 338NV/182CA.  A high clearance 4WD, ATV or Dirt Bike is recommended and you most likely will need to use the low range of gears for both going up and back down.  Late spring, after the snow melts, to early winter, before it snows, are preferable for access into the area, however if you try to make it anyway before or after then, don't say you weren't warned!
