Skin in the Game is a figure of speech, perhaps coined by Warren Buffett and perhaps not, which refers to an owner’s/leader’s/administrator’s personal investment in the wares which he or she is hawking. That person can be more convincing at hooking and reeling in investors, so the argument goes, if he or she is risking his or her own money in that same venture; that is, they themselves should have skin in the game.
While this metaphor was not coined with geocaching in mind, is certainly seems apropos. I love the hunt for a good hide, but others will only invest their time and effort making those good hides if I myself do the same; I need to have skin in the game of geocaching.
This all came to mind right after I found The Modern Day Pirates 1. It was one of those caches—you know the type—that takes you to this little pocket of park or green amid the suburban sprawl, a place you’d not have found but for geocaching. As I was walking back to the car my GPSr indicated that there might just be room for one more hide along the way. As I looked around for a suitable hiding spot, with no idea whatsoever in mind for a cache name, I came across the calling card of a predecessor (pictured below) who’d put some skin in the game, and so I decided to do the same.
