The first Sea Sky & Bush Walk was initiated by the Rotary Club of Waipukurau in 1999, as a major fund raiser towards freeholding nine hectares of land purchased by Rotary, to establish the Arboretum `The Forest of Memories', which is based at the foot of Pukeora Hill, Waipukurau.
Fundraising towards the purchase of this piece of land has been a Rotary Project for some years and it is very satisfying to see this project finally realised. Recent funds have gone towards Youth in our district, Project K is one of a number of organizations that has benefited from the Sea Sky & Bush Walk. Future funds will go towards providing and building a district walkway, which will incorporate the Arboretum and surrounding countryside.
In it's first year approximately 200 walkers were hosted by Waipukurau Rotarians at a camp-site on Aramoana Beach. It was a complete three day package including hearty meals and warm conviviality, just as it continues to be today. Walkers are now accommodated in more comfortable surroundings at Pukeora Estate in Waipukurau, but the recipe remains much the same. You have a choice of a complete three day package, or one or two days, that is fully catered, includes accommodation and offers a unique walk program characterised by its varied structure each year in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The Sea Walk is planned around the spectacular Hawkes Bay coastline, and Pacific Ocean, often taking in historic homesteads and our coastal villages.
The Sky Walk allows those participating to have breathtaking views to the Ruahine Ranges, and coastal hill country with sea views on a clear day.
The Bush Walk varies in location, but has often been the favourite. We've walked through acres of virgin native bush, the finest woodland gardens, totara stands.
Our walks continue to be a great success, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of the Rotary team and walkers from all over New Zealand and overseas, many of whom return year after year, participating in what is a popular annual event in Central Hawkes Bay.
