ITA - “Partì come un gioco e dissi: facciamo un cerchio, facciamo affiorare l`acqua e ci mettiamo i coccodrilli”. Così l`architetto Filippo Monti ha raccontato quella che era l’idea che diede poi vita al dancing più esotico della riviera. Il Woodpecker negli anni 50 era situato alla Terza Traversa dove oggi c’è il condominio con lo stesso nome. Era famoso per le sue serate a tema e per il terrazzo superiore che ebbe per un certo periodo un altro locale di nome Pepper, aperto di pomeriggio per i ragazzi più giovani che ospitò gruppi famosi dell’epoca come l’Equipe 84. Il Woodpecker della Terza Traversa, secondo quanto ricorda ancora il Sig. Aurelio De Maria (figlio di Gherardo, il proprietario) nacque quasi come circolo privato del suo gruppo di amici. Infatti a quell’epoca (fine anni 40 inizio anni 50) i giovani delle famiglie delle ville di Milano Marittima non avevano un luogo dove ballare: e così è nato il Woodpecker nel 1952. A differenza di quanto è stato scritto erroneamente il locale partì subito come luogo d’élite, vi era gente che veniva da tutta Italia e i prezzi erano i più alti della riviera. Il locale faceva concorrenza al Savioli di Riccione e rimase a lungo più importante del Pineta. Ben presto per via dell’afflusso di gente che lo popolava, il Woodpecker, tra il 63 e il 64, fu fatto sgomberare e costretto a trasferirsi. Gherardo De Maria, il proprietario, chiese che il suo locale fosse trasferito si fuori città, ma non troppo, per questo propose la porzione di pineta situata nell’angolo tra Viale Matteotti e Viale Nullo Baldini, ma come testimoniano i fatti, non fu accontentato. Così nel 1966 fu affidato ai Fabbri Ferrai di Forlì l’incarico di innalzare la cupola in vetroresina, che ricalcava la Cupola del Brunelleschi a Firenze; inoltre, diversi bulldozer crearono un cratere contornato da una lunga duna perimetrale: questo perchè nell’idea dell’Architetto, dovevano conciliarsi la terra, ovvero il fondo del cratere, con il cielo, cioè la cima della duna. La nuova sede aprì al pubblico nel Giugno del 1968 dallo stesso De Maria. Il servizio bar era gestito dal mitico Peppino Manzi. L’inaugurazione fu affidata all’orchestra di Franco Campanino (di Napoli) e all’orchestra di Tonino D’Ischia (di Torre Annunziata, Napoli). Purtroppo non durò molto, per colpa della posizione ma soprattutto dell’ambiente umido e pieno di zanzare e rane che infestavano il locale; così già nei primi anni 70 il Woodpecker chiuse i battenti per sempre lasciando la struttura in balia della vegetazione. Oggi sembra che in questo piccolo cratere nel quale è posizionato il dancing, il tempo si sia fermato, ancora ben conservata è la pavimentazione e la famosa cupola, la quale è stata presa di mira dall’artista di fama mondiale Blu, inserito dal “The Guardian” tra i 10 migliori writer al mondo, che ne ha dipinto l’interno con un girotondo surreale di esseri viventi a metà tra macchine e animali.

The local competition was at the Savioli in Riccione and remained for a long time the most important of the pine forest. Today it seems that in this small crater into which is placed the dancing, the time has stopped, still well-preserved is the flooring and its famous dome, which has been targeted by world renowned artist Blu, posted by "The Guardian" among the 10 best writer in the world, who has painted the Interior with a surreal mix of living beings halfway between machines and animals.
