Geocache Description:

The Palace Demesne Public Park

Situated within walking distance of the city centre, for over two hundred years the undulating parkland of the Palace Demesne has been one of the glories of Armagh. The Demesne, comprising some 300 acres, is the creation of Archbishop Richard Robinson. The Palace was the residence of the Archbishops of the Church of Ireland from 1770 to 1975.

There is also a restaurant and coffee shop within the grounds called the Moody Boar.

The Park is open freely all year round.

At the upper end of the demesne, the ground ascends to a point called Knox 's Hill.

On this there is an obelisk, erected by Primate Robinson in 1783, to perpetuate the memory of his intimacy with the 1st Duke of Northumberland (Lord Lieutenant of Ireland), through whose instrumentality he had been translated to Armagh from the bishopric of Kildare.

The obelisk is 113 feet in height, and it is due to Dr. Robinson’s memory to say that its erection was suggested as a means of honourable employment for the people of Armagh during a time of severe distress. The obelisk is difficult to see from the Palace when the trees are in leaf.

The cache is a 150mm x 150mm sized tablock box and when placed contained log book, pen/pencil. There are several parking areas within the park and a newly refurbished playground.
