Geocache Description:

When I planned my vacation I was absolutly surprised, that there is nothing to cache on Ventotene O.O  An island with such a varied history and no cache to talk about it??? Let me try to solve this 'problem'  Ventotene or former Pandataria is known as the island to which emporer Augustus banished his daugther. It became a kind of 'tradition' so further women like Agrippina and Julia Livilla got exiled here, too, in later times. Also in this line a prison camp was created on nearby Santo Stefano under the Bourbon rule which was restructured under Mussolini to incarcerate opponents and communists. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventotene) But it is also home of hope. Hope about freedom and peace. The idea of a federation of European States, so that the European countries would all stay close to one another to prevent another war. The Manifest of Ventotene was written by Altiero Spinelli, Ernesto Rossi and Eugenio Colorni on cigarettepaper and was completed in June 1941.
