L’Avenue du 22 mars Traditional Cache

Une cache en hommage au mouvement SOS Montfort et les milliers de Franco-ontariens qui se sont donné la main pour sauver leur hôpital.

Ne cherchez pas l’Avenue du 22-mars sur un plan de la ville d’Ottawa. Il s’agit en fait d’une simple allée, qui débouche sur un stationnement. Pourtant, si vous posez la question à l’un des plus de 500 000 francophones de l’Ontario, il y a fort à parier qu’il saura qu’elle mène à l’entrée principale de l’Hôpital Montfort, emblème de la lutte de la minorité francophone en Ontario. Et qu’elle a été baptisée ainsi en l’honneur du grand rassemblement qui a eu lieu le 22 mars 1997 pour protester contre la fermeture imminente de cet établissement de santé, le seul hôpital francophone d’importance à l’ouest du Québec.

La cache est un "lock 'n lock" format sandwich caché au creux d'un arbre géant.   Elle devrait être accessible en hiver; cependant, un hiver très enneigé pourrait rendre l’accès plutôt difficile. Au fil des années, le sentier menant au PZ est devenu assez difficile à parcourir.

Le stationnement n'est plus permis sur la rue qui mène à l’aéroport et à la marina. Il faut donc se stationner au musée ou plus près de la marina.

There’s no point in looking for l’Avenue du 22-mars on a map of the City of Ottawa.  It is in fact a short entrance way leading to a parking area. And yet, if you were to ask any of the more than 500,000 francophones who call Ontario their home, most of them would recognize the main entrance to Hôpital Montfort, a beacon of their struggle for minority rights in their province.  To this day, the great gathering that was held on March 22, 1997, remains, for the entire Franco-Ontarian population, a powerful symbol of the energetic defence of their rights. The avenue which leads to the entrance to the hospital has been renamed March 22 in memory of this historical event.

The cache is a sandwich sized "lock 'n lock" hidden in a giant maple tree.  It should be accessible year round, although the approach might be a bit difficult in deep snow. Over the years, the path leading to GZ has become overgrown with vegetation, with fallen trees along the way, hence on the challenging side!

Parking is no longer permitted along the road leading to the airport and marina, but there is parking available at the end of that road (close to the airport building).
