Santa Paula Barbada
Paula era una joven de extremada belleza, nacida en la cercana localidad de Cardeñosa en los oscuros primeros siglos del Medievo. Además de su buen porte, resultaba ser una dechada de virtudes ya que ayudaba a los demás con gran diligencia, siendo una gran trabajadora. Para subsistir acudía a diario a la ciudad para vender las verduras que ella misma cosechaba. Y como el camino que utilizaba desembocaba en la ermita de San Segundo, aprovechaba para rezar ya que era profundamente religiosa.
Su presencia era conocida por muchos que utilizaban el puente que salva el cauce del río Adaja y era querida y respetada por todos ellos. Sin embargo, siempre hay algunos que albergan malas intenciones: un joven caballero había quedado prendado de Paula e insistentemente, intentaba acercarse a ella, requiriéndola y lanzándole palabras libidinosas poco apropiadas de ser pronunciadas por un caballero y menos de ser escuchadas por una dama. A todo ello, la doncella respondía negativamente, intentando alejar al acosador.
Pero el camino utilizado por Paula era solitario en algunos tramos y un día el gañán, al que no puede denominarse caballero, la cerró el paso con su cabalgadura. Ella echó a correr y se escondió en la próxima ermita de San Segundo. Desesperada porque nota como se acerca el susodicho, pide a Dios que "le diese alguna fealdad en el rostro" y de su rostro nace al momento una densa barba "tan espesa y tan compuesta como si fuera varón".
El malintencionado criminal entró en la ermita y tan sólo encontró a un ermitaño al que inquirió si había visto a la joven. Paula contestó que no y éste, a pesar de su insistencia, abandonó la ermita sin poder consumar sus aberrantes propósitos.
El sitio donde, supuestamente, Paula estaba sentada se convirtió en capilla muy cerca de la iglesia. Parece que el granito de la roca donde Paula estaba sentada, hizo una cruz perfecta donde la santa se arrodillaba y oraba. Más tarde el lugar recibió el nombre de Roca de Santa Barbada. A la chica, desde entonces, se le llamó Santa Barbada e hizo penitencia el resto de sus días viviendo cerca de la ermita de San Segundo donde fue enterrada. A partir de este hecho milagroso, Paula trasladó su residencia a la ermita de San Segundo donde vivió el resto de sus días (falleció al poco) dedicada a la oración y a la ayuda hacia los demás. Allí mismo fue enterrada bajo un altar lateral, a la derecha del altar mayor, guardada por una reja bajo la inscripción "Esta reja retablo mandó hacer la magnífica Doña Isabel de Ribera, hija del caballero de Valderrabano, a honor de Santa Paula Barbada, hecha en el año 1547. Se dice que murió a los 17 años, un 20 de febrero". En una inscripción hecha en una tablilla que pende del sepulcro de Paula, se lee:
"Sednos buena intercesora y abogada, gloriosa Paula Barbada"
Declarada Santa, es la patrona de su patria chica, Cardeñosa

Paula was an extremely beautiful girl, born in the nearby town of Cardenosa in the first dark centuries of the Middle Ages. The site where supposedly sat Paula became chapel near the church. It seems that the granite rock where Paula was sitting, made a perfect cross where the saint knelt and prayed. Later the place was called Rock Santa Barbada. The girl, since then, it was called St. Barbados and did penance the rest of his days living near the hermitage of San Segundo where he was buried. From this miraculous event, Paula moved his residence to the hermitage of San Segundo where he lived the rest of his life (he died shortly) dedicated to prayer and helping others. There it was buried under a side altar to the right of the high altar, guarded by a gate under the inscription "This grille altarpiece sent make the grand Doña Isabel de Ribera, daughter of Knight Valderrabano to honor Santa Paula Barbada, made year 1547 is said to have died at age 17, on the 20th of February. "Be a good intercessor and advocate, glorious Paula Barbada"
Declared Holy, is the patron saint of their homeland Cardeñosa.
