Geocache Description:

This cache is accessible at all hours (which is also telling, in regards to its location).

Wilton, an authentic James River plantation house, has accurately been described as a “superb essay in colonial design.”  The five-bay, double pile brick mansion adapts the English Georgian style into a gracious architectural statement that is distinctly both American and Virginian. Completed circa 1753 for William Randolph III and Anne Harrison Randolph, Wilton was the centerpiece of a 2,000 acre plantation and home to the Randolph family for more than a century.  It was here that they entertained George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette.

During a succession of owners following the Civil War, the house was allowed to gradually deteriorate as the area it occupied became increasingly industrialized. Ultimately threatened with demolition, it was purchased in 1933 by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia which had it carefully dismantled and reconstructed at its present site on the banks of the James River, fifteen miles west of its original location. This timely intervention preserved the original structure intact, including its remarkable floor - to - ceiling paneling in every room, a feature shared by only one other pre-Revolutionary home in America.

Congrats to FOXTROT33 for the FTF!
