Om du er interessert i kultur og historie er dette ein spennande plass for deg! Dette området har vore valfarta til (og gjennom) av mennesker heilt frå tidleg steinalder. Brandsøy har vore veidestad for mange frå den tid og opp til vi vart meir fastbuande - truleg grunna at sundet, heile vegen frå Neset i sør og omtrent heilt til Grønenga i nord, ligg skjerma for vind både frå den strenge vestavinden. Her drog dei sjøfartya sine over leiregrunnen på fjære sjø, og "rasta" alle mogelege stader på land på begge sider av sundet. Det fins askespor i jordsmonnet hundretals av stader her. Det er også funnet avslag frå tilverking av steinalderverkty, det er funnet brukte pilspissar, og emner av ulike slag, jordholer som dei har søkt tilhald i og det er funnet helleristningar. Frå vikingtid og middelalder er det funnet enkeltståande graver samt spor etter ei kyrkje med tilhøyrande gravplass (i dag er dette golfbane, samt ein privat hage med kringliggande bygningar). I nyare gamal tid har bygda holdt nasjonalt kjende fangar fengsla. Bygda skjuler mange historiske skattar, som dessverre ikkje er så veldig godt kjend for folk flest. Det ryktast at merking av viktige historiske stader er under arbeid, noko vi håper vert verkeleg i rimelig nær framtid. I så tilfelle anbefalar vi deg å ta turen tilbake, og få heile biletet av bygda Brandsøy i ein historisk samanheng tilknytta dei aktuelle lokalitetane! :) I mellomtida - lykke til med jakta på geocacher!
Welcome to Brandsøy! When standing at the cache location you´re in the middle of the village Brandsøy, a hamlet by the entry roads to Florø. From here you can go mountain hiking on either rooty paths or asphalt roads, go bathing in the sea different places, and here are many traces of protected cultural heritage back to the early Stone Age! When standing on the small bridge that you can see through the glass wall of the bus shelter, on the private property to your right (facing south) there´s a viking grave (a pile of stone), and at the private property on your left there´ve been found many traces in the soil from early stone age - arrowheads, cooking pits, a soil cave, petroglyphs and there´s also a newly discovered viking grave as well. Unfortunately nothing is visible for the public to see - the things to be seen has been sent to a museum in Bergen. Still, the stories that this whole village holds has yet to be well known for the public, and even for the locals. As most of the secrets are hidden in the ground, and no one has put up signs or in any other way has priority to tell the stories, you are one of few new ones to get to know this by now. But we hope that in a few years from now, the local community will put up informative signs around the village, to show off all the hidden, exciting stories from the early stoneage, from the vikings and up till now... You´ll have to come back then, and get a real tour and the whole picture of this buissy, gathering area on the west coast of Norway! In the meantime - happy geocaching :)
