EAST MAPLEWOOD SCHOOL

Southern Door School District #3 (Township of Forestville)

OLD SCHOOL: History Lesson

The original East Maplewood School was a log structure built in 1873. Later the log building was replaced with a more substantial brick structure which was to become the east section. In 1880, an addition was added to the west and it became a two room school. It appears to be two buildings placed together as one has cream colored brick and the other section is of red brick. The building still stands to this day. The first families to send children to the school were the Gordons, Days, Writts, Birdsalls, Hunts, Lawsons, Brigams, Kramers and Jennerjohns. Over the years the school had all 8 grades taught by only one teacher. At times when the number of students became too great, a second teacher was hired, lower grades were in one room and upper grades in the other.

Most of the many teachers who taught in East Maplewood stayed only a year or two then moved on. The longest tenure of teaching was that of Mr. Marvin Seiler who taught from 1924 to 1942.

The school stopped running as an all eight grade school in 1960 when the Southern Door School District was created. It then became a two grade school of various ages until it closed for good in 1973.

This is also the school that I went to 2nd Grade in 1970. My teacher was Mrs. Gertrude Pfifer, the one thing I remember most about her was that she was a strict ornery ol”Gal… Or maybe I was just a little trouble maker. NAH…

This concludes the history lesson for today!
