This is a lovely area to explore with its network of paths through woodlands and open fields. The village of Essendon also has a lovely church and a playground (which is located down the footpath adjacent to the school on School Lane), some weekends you might even get to watch a bit of cricket at the big playing field. From Essendon you can walk to Little Berkhampstead and I hope to place more in this series along this route.
You are looking for a silver painted mag-nano container. It is not on the nearby residential gate! You are looking for an agricultural field gate!!! You DO NOT need to cross the fence or gate to find it. If you link this cache in with the Spiders Are Great #2-4 caches you can do a little loop. Come for the mag-nano and stay a while for the view across the valley! The Hertfordshire Way runs along the field boundary directly opposite.
Parking in the village of Essendon is on street either in School Lane or by the church. There is also parking in a layby opposite the PH at West End.
About the cache's name sake....
Green orb-weavers (Araniella sp.) grow to a size of 4 to 6mm and are found throughout the UK. You tend to see them from April to October. As with many other species their egg sacs over-winter but the spiders do not. Green Orb-weavers, as the name suggests, have a bright green abdomen and a yellow or reddish coloured head. Despite their almost fluorescent colour Green orb-weavers are very well camouflaged amongst vegetation, but are very obvious when they stray from their normal habitat. Green orb-weavers are a common native species found throughout the UK and northern Europe.
