Geocache Description:

Not the usual drive by and grab, but at some times of the year this is a possibility

The Borland Road continues past Borland Lodge. Borland Lodge is used for many school groups, church groups and clubs. The Kidz can go tramping, rock climbing, canoeing and tenting.

At the car park where the barrier gates are is a nature walk in the bush, well worth the walk. Other tracks can also start from here.

The road past the Lodge is open usually in the Summer months and is subject to snow so can be closed at anytime to 4x4, bikes and quads. (But somehow the quads and bikes can get through). Mountain bikes and walking access anytime but be prepared for the weather conditions. The Pass is 990m. From the Lodge to the pass is 15 km. The gravel road is accessable to bikes, quads, mountain bikes, 4x4, not recommended for two wheel drive cars. This road follows the two transmittion lines from West Arm Manapouri Power Station to Borland lodge. Powering Tiwai Aluminium Smelter and some of the national grid. The road does NOT go all the way to the power station. Although it can be walked up the non road section. Some people have carried their mountain bikes and continued on the road at the top end. There is NO camping near the power station and permission needs to be had to continue on towards Deep Cove (Doubtful Sound).

Borland Biv is at an altitude close to 760m.

When this cache was placed the group had planned to drive to this GZ and tramp into Green Lake Hut 3 hours tramp.

So the cache was really aimed to be in there, but the road was closed.

We tramped up the road 6 hours to the Biv and stayed the night (5 of us in a 2 man Biv) and tramped out the next day 5.5 hours. It is a bit of a climb up to the saddle from this side. A long climb on way in a short 2km climb to saddle on the outward walk. But we made it and lived to tell the tale. It was either do this or go home the group voted to tramp and camp at the biv.

You will need to bring your own pen or use the one in the Biv.

Cache a screw top container hidden from the rain.
