Geocache Description:




The ADVer's are particularly fond of finding caches placed at old school sites, whether it be just a sign marking the spot, just a remaining memorial gate, or on the odd occassion some remaining buildings. The younger ones of course are quick to compare with their own school, and as we all attended, or are attending, big city schools ourselves we  like to take some time and imagine the time and the place, and what it would be like attending  the particular old rural school we are visiting. We were quite thrilled to come across a number of old schools that remain completely intact so hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did....

You will find the cache at the Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve, site of the old Beaconsfield school. Although not signposted as such, it is administered as a reserve by the Manawatu District Council. The former school building and associated sheds are used as a local community facility, with the local community also providing maintenance of the grounds and buildings, and plantings of native bush in a small fenced off area next to the rear paddock. A feature of the reserve is the attractve mature trees, including a large totara which marks the south west corner of the reserve, and a weeping elm. The school house is identified in the District Plan as having heritage value Category C.
