Geocache Description:

The Frankland Islands - High, Normanby, Mabel, Round & Russell - lie about 10 km offshore from the mouth of the Russell & Mulgrave rivers at Russell Heads, about 45 km South - East of Cairns.

*** Updated information 26/01/2023 *** To find this cache you will need to use a dedicated GPS - not a mobile phone. This is not a carpark cache! There is no mobile reception here. To LOG this cache or to leave a DNF I will require a photo to prove you are actually on this island. This is not an easy cache to find, therefore I have increased it's difficulty.

Featuring outcrops of weathered & eroded green & white metamorphic rock, the islands are part of the coastal mountain range which was separated from the mainland by a rise in sea level 6000 years ago. The vegetation on the islands is varied & includes patches of lush rainforest, coastal plant communities & mangrove swamps.

The Frankland Islands are a popular fishing & boating destination. High, Normanby, Mabel & Round islands were declared National Parks in 1936 & the surrounding waters were included in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in 1983.

Access to the islands is by private boat from either the Mulgrave or Russell river boat ramps. Sandbars at the mouth of Mutchero Inlet at Russell Heads makes crossing the shallow river mouth tide - dependent - check them before you go!

The cache is located on High Island & accessible from the sand spit on the North West side.

The container is a small black plastic tube hidden in scrub on the edge of the camping area.

No food, plastic or trackables to be placed inside cache.
