Te One is one of five main settlements on Chatham Islands (total island population 600 people). It is situated on a sand dune isthmus between Lake Huro and the open ocean at Petre Bay. The Department of Conservation base is situated here along with the freight terminal for Air Chathams. Te One Primary School is the main school for children up to Year 8 at the southern end of the island. High school age children have to go to New Zealand for their ongoing education or begin correspondence schooling. Also present in the village is the Te Kohanga Reo Wharekauri which provides Maori cultural learning experiences for children. The Whakamaharatanga Marae has commemorative plaques for those who served and died during WW1 and WW2, plus the names of those who drowned in a major boating accident on 17 July 1931. Nearby St Augustines Church is one of the island’s oldest historic buildings, built in 1885.
The cache is hidden close to the main road and is a small tube. It contains a rolled paper log. Bring your own pen. You don’t have to enter private land or trample any plants on the garden to reach the cache hidden in the tree.
