Tame Horomona Rehe (known as Tommy Solomon) was born in 1884 and died in 1933. He was recognised as the last pure blood Moriori, the first people of the Chatham Islands. Members of his tribe are still living on the Chatham Islands today but all are partly descended from Maori or European colonists. The statue was unveiled in December 1986 by Prime Minister David Lange.
The statue is situated past the fishing village of Owenga at the end of the south-eastern road on the island. The memorial is easily accessible by 4WD vehicles or cars in good weather. The statue is on a small private land reserve but the public are allowed to visit the statue. Please don't touch the statue. The cache is located nearby on public land (road reserve) and is a small container. Bring your own pen. There is a slight risk that the local native rail (weka) may steal the cache from its hiding spot!
