Please be careful attempting this cache.
The cliffs and vegetation above/surrounding GZ are very fragile and big chunks can crumble off at any time.
If a storm is occurring or a hefty north-east wind is blowing, it would be wise to attempt the cache on another day.
2-3 hours either side of high tide will give ample "dry-foot" access. High tide will require wading.
No tree climbing or clambering on the crumbling clay cliffs required. Help protect the cliffs from further erosion.
BYOP
Coords were averaged over 2 days and tricky to get some accuracy, so +/- 5m
A bit of Howick history can be seen mid way at the beach, at low tide if you are interested.
In 1854 a short wharf was built almost in alignment with Selwyn Road. Sea transport was the preferred means of transportation due to the unsatisfactory state of the roads and the unpredictable ferry at Panmure. In 1898 a replacement (longer) 900' wharf was built. Improvements in roading in the 1920's and the opening up of a concrete road from Auckland to Howick in 1931 (patches of this concrete road can still be seen along Ridge Rd) meant the wharf became unnecessary and uneconomic to repair. The wharf was demolished in 1935. The piles of this wharf can still be seen today at low tide.
