Geocache Description:

Ever wondered what was just around the corner from the end of Howick Beach?

A cache , some big cliffs, a small beach, a large boat shed and several concrete structures.

Allow 60-70 minutes either side of LOW TIDE to gain access to GZ without it being too wet underfoot. Any other time you will have to wade, swim, boat, kayak, or rock hop.

Terrain difficulty is based on walking to GZ. Shoes are the recommended footwear, as the rocks/oysters are slippery when wet.

Due to vegetation, coords were difficult to average, so +/- 5m accuracy. Use the hint to get you in the right area.

BYOP

When exploring this area, I was curious as to the concrete structures tucked in behind this small beach. I contacted Alan La Roche, the local Howick Historian. This was his reply:

“This beach is known as Stevenson’s Beach. The beach was also called NUDE Bay as it was a very private beach. Sir William Stevenson lived above the beach. He was coach for the New Zealand rowing teams, some of whom probably stored their rowing skiffs in sheds here in the 1950’s and 1960’s. His two sons were also keen scullers and their boats were stored here. He had several sheds above the beach. You can still see the steps and foundations of those sheds. Bill Stevenson used to coach the rowers using a large speed boat which he stored in a shed here. There used to be a sloping timber ramp from the sheds to the water. The hole into the cliff would have accommodated the long rowing boats. Bill died in 1983. He owned W.A.Stevenson and Sons who built roads, developed many subdivisions, owned coal mines in the Waikato, made concrete, and concrete blocks. He built many hydro dams on the Waikato and built the water storage dams in the Hunua ranges. He was Mayor of Howick. A little midden has come down the cliff with natural erosion. Thank you for asking me to identify these structures which I enjoy doing.

With best wishes, Alan La Roche, Howick Historian”

21 June 17 update. There is a lot of storm debris on top of the retaining wall so you will need to wade over that to get to GZ. Hint updated.
