SPAM – the very word brings a chuckle/grimace to most people’s faces. It has been described as ‘The Rodney Dangerfield of luncheon meats” – because it just doesn’t get any respect. Junk email was even named after this meat product. All from a name that is believed to be just a shortened version of ‘spiced ham’. It’s not like it is made from weird pork parts. The meat is mainly pork shoulder – the same stuff most pulled pork recipes use.
Our British comedy troupe across the ocean used it in a few of their skits, most notably one involving Vikings and a restaurant.
Be that as it may, good old Spam gets a bad rap that it doesn’t really deserve. Do a Google search for Korean or Hawaiian recipes that use spam – you’ll see what I mean. There are even cookbooks for it.
I’ve had a couple Hawaiian spam snacks – you wouldn’t know it was spam if they didn’t tell you.
The wiki page for Spam notes how widespread the meat is. Everyone says they hate it – but somebody is buying a heck of a lot of it!
The cache itself is an ammo can, placed for Ottawa winter caching. There are a couple of geo-swag items for the FTF crew that hits it shortly after the 6PM cannon. Some decorations will initially be placed around the GZ. When they’re gone, they won’t be replaced – so find it early!
