Geocache Description:

This cache will lead you to the gravesite of the real life Ichabod Crane, the 19th Century army major whom Washington Irving borrowed the name of for his classic story "the Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

The listed coordinates will take you to the grave of the real life Ichabod Crane. Unlike his literary and film namesake, the real life Ichabod (born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey on July 18th, 1787) was a military officer in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army for 48 years. In 1853 Crane moved to New Springville in Staten Island, New York with his wife Charlotte. He died in October of 1857 while on active duty and was buried here in Staten Island.

The fictional Ichabod Crane can be traced to 1814 when Washington Irving, working as an aide to the Governor of New York, met the real life Ichabod at Fort Pike in Sackets Harbor, New York. Apparently liking the name Irving borrowed it for his classic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," which had remained popular and well loved since its first publication in 1820.

To solve the puzzle and locate the physical cache you must find the grave of "JOSEPH E. Son of John T. & Eliza Metsereau." It is a large grave marker directly across and a few feet away from where Ichabod Crane is buried.
