Geocache Description:

Overview

This Multi will take you to two monuments located in Patriot Park in Millville, NJ. There is parking nearby, and it is only a short walk to complete this cache. There are scenic views of the Maurice River to be seen and eagles are frequently spotted soaring overhead. You will need to bring a pen, and you must sign the log to get this Smiley. More information about the Vietnam Memorial can be found at the Related Web Page link.

Vietnam Memorial

Here on the banks of the Maurice River is a modest tribute to the Millville soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. Erected in 1977, by the local Jaycees, it was believed to be the first monument of its kind by its builders. However, there is at least one earlier monument known to be elsewhere.

The memorial was low-budget and industrial-looking: two iron beams supporting a thin bronze plate affixed with two large copper medallions. One side showed a soldier tending to a dying comrade; the other had his last words, imploring everyone not to forget.

A third of a century passed. The elements were tough on the memorial. The beams, which were supposed rust to resemble the red clay of Vietnam, instead chemically reacted to the other metals, eating through the plate and corroding the medallions.

Some of the Jaycees from 1977 were still around and thought that their first-of-its-kind memorial deserved a second chance. The old plate and beams were thrown away. The medallions were scrubbed clean and attached to a new three-ton 10-foot-tall black granite slab. The refurbished monument was rededicated on September 10, 2010.

Veterans Day

I have placed this cache on Veterans Day, which is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11th. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.

The Cache

In order to locate the Final, you will need to visit both of these monuments and gather some very basic information.

At the All Service Monument you will need to check out the brick dedications and find one “In honor of Jeff Stauffer.” Substitute the number of years Stauffer served in the USCG for AB.

At the Vietnam Memorial, posted cords, there is a quote on the backside of the medallion. Count the total number of letters in the quote and let that represent CD.

The cache is located at N 39° 23.6AB W 075° 02.4CD
