About the City
A small village, Dunapentele on the Danube bank was turned into an industrial town and renamed to Sztálinváros in 1951, then Dunaújváros in 1961. Its fast development was related to the establishment of the Danube Iron Works (Dunai Vasmű). Most of its inhabitants moved here to find work in the factory.
But Dunaújvárosról is not just an industrial town! Its lively cultural life, its artists, choirs, exhibitions, events prove that the stereotypes are wrong, the city is changing and renewing itself in the cultural field as well.
The Danube Bank
This cache is to introduce the Danube bank that runs along the city. In my opinion this is the prettiest, most peaceful part of the city that is well worth a visit, a nice walk, or even a pick-nick or a cook-out.
From the bird watch you can observe oriole, great spotted woodpecker, hooded crow, song thrush, common chaffinch and many other bird species. If the children had enough birdwatching, there is a large grassy area nearby with a small soccer field, a playground, and a bit further a cook-out area from where the parents can watch their children playing, but still enjoy the peace.
A family cook-out even, called Parázs-Varázs, is organized here annually, on the first weekend of May. At that time there are also many activites for kids, as the last Sunday of May is officially the Day of the Children.
On some weekends powerboat races are held on the Danube.
If you feel like working-out a bit, you do not need to go far either. One level above, but still on the Lower Danube Bank, a fitness trail was created recently.
If you prefer more peaceful sports, such as angling, you can enjoy that here, too. You will need to buy a daily pass at the Dunaferr Angler Association (Dunaferr Horgászegyesület) at Gagarin tér 13. fszt. 1.
