The 'Hakkenden', or 'Dog Warriors' it is one of the story of Japanese mythology. 'Satomi-Hakkenden' is very long-length novel written by Bakin Kyokutei, in Edo period.
Outline: A young princess, the last of her clan, was endowed with eight spiritually-linked warriors ("Dog Warriors") to protect her from various supernatural menaces. The catch, of course, was that none of the warriors knew they had been so selected; each of them recognized the other over time via the presence of special magic beads. Each bead, and thus each warrior, was also linked with a specific Confucian spiritual virtue.

照文は塔婆にむかって端座し、石塔をあおぎ見た。その細工は精妙をきわめている。 第一の壇には義実の両親の位牌があり、石のかたわらに、水二、三升もいれた網袋がある。これはなんのためなのか。次の壇の左右には、花をそなえた水盤がある。さらに下壇には香炉があり、塔の四方の木の板には四流れの紙はたがつるしてある。それには、諸行無常、是生滅法、生滅滅已、寂滅爲樂という涅槃経の四旬の偈をしるしてある。昭文は、懐中から伽羅の一つつみを取り出して焼香し、ぬかづき、黙祷して、しりぞいた。 ついで犬塚信乃が焼香した。信乃の祖父大塚三戍、母方の祖父井直秀は忠義抜群で、昔年結城落城のおりに討死した。で、犬士のうち信乃を第一番に焼香させた。信乃は、涙とともに再拝してさがった。つぎは道節・荘助・毛野・大角・現八・小文吾らとつづいた。そして照文は、ふたたび代四郎と焼香した。 丶大は、もとのところにしりぞき、すわって木魚をうちならし、十人の僧と念仏数百遍をとなえた。
