The first railway line from Pietermaritzburg up the incredibly steep escarpment to Hilton and beyond was constructed in 1884 and it had many stations along its route, one of those being Leonard Station, this one after Hilton on the way to Cedara..
For many years this railway line, the route of which can still be seen, was the main commuter line from Pietermaritzburg to Hilton and beyond and used by business people and pupils who chose life in the comfort and mist belt of Hilton rather than the humidity and heat of Pietermaritzburg 400m below.
The railway line was decommissioned and most of it uplifted in the 1980s after nearly 100 years of use. The section passing Leonard Station is the last usable and reasonably intact line running from Hilton Station to Cedara Station. It is hoped that this section will be upgraded for use by a steam loco at Hilton Station which still works.
Although the rails are still there, there has been no traffic for over 30 years, but be on the look out anyway !! Well done Westview4 on the FTF !!!
