Saltia.
Charles Simmons purchased land at the entrance to Pichi Richi Pass and, in 1859, built a hotel. Around it, in 1862, he laid out the town of Saltia, name derived from the Aboriginal thaltja - 'the gums'.
Wander around the town area and find all that remains of the settlement shown in the picture. This was the town at the entrance to the simplest route into the Flinders Ranges hinterland from the 1860’s.
Local legend has it that the grave site at the reference location is for a nun buried from a convent in the settlement. None of this particular story is able to be confirmed at this stage.
One hundred years later Saltia was reborn as a location for “The Sundowners” a 1960 film that tells the story of an outback family torn between the father's desires to continue his nomadic sheep droving ways and the wife's and son's wish to settle down. The international film starred Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum, Peter Ustinov, and Chips Rafferty
