[ITA] R.EM. MRS – La casa di Giacomo
L'obiettivo di questa serie di cache è quello di valorizzare la ruralità del territorio dell'Altopiano dei Sette Comuni attraverso alcuni passi selezionati della letteratura di Mario Rigoni Stern, superbo e indimenticato scrittore di Asiago.
Tra tutti i passi in cui si parla della Casa di Giacomo, protagonista del suo libro “Le stagioni di Giacomo”, abbiamo deciso di selezionarne uno tra i più significativi.
La Grande Guerra non aveva distrutto del tutto questa contrada; non l'aveva rasa al suolo come le altre vicine. Stranamente era rimasta in piedi anche se era stata sotto il tiro di tutte le artiglierie, anche se era stata abbandonata, ripresa e ancora abbandonata da italiani e austroungarici. Forse perché qui c'erano degli ospedaletti da campo, come dimostravano i tre cimiteri dove erano stati sepolti quattrocento soldati italiani? Queste vecchie case erano state solo saccheggiate e incendiate: i muri erano sempre quelli da secoli, come anche le grosse travi di larice che il fuoco aveva solo carbonizzato in superficie.
Adesso, da una trentina d'anni, le sette porte della contrada si aprono solamente quando i cittadini salgono dalla pianura per fare vacanza. I discendenti di coloro che le avevano costruite con le pietre scavate dalle montagne e con i tronchi scelti nei nostri boschi, che le avevano riparate nel 1920, che qui avevano iniziato o terminato la loro vita, o che da qui erano partiti per luoghi lontani di lavoro, o per guerre, non ci sono più. Non si accendono focolari ma si fanno grigliate all'aperto bruciando salsicce sul barbecue nei fine di settimana.
Gli orti sono diventati parcheggi. Anche la fontana non c'è più: impediva la manovra delle automobili. Tutto è cambiato. È molto lontano quello che era vivo dentro questa casa, rimasta vuota di tutto e piena di silenzio. Qui era nato e vissuto fino ai vent'anni il mio compagno di banco.

The goal of this R.EM. MRS series is to exploit the territory of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, a high plateau northwest of Vicenza, by using the literature of Mario Rigoni Stern, a superb unforgiven writer from Asiago.
GIACOMO’S HOUSE
The Great War hadn’t completely destroyed this hamlet; it hadn’t been razed to the ground like the ones nearby. Strangely enough it had remained standing even though it had been under fire by every artillery, had been abandoned, retaken then abandoned again by the Italians and Austro-Hungarians. Perhaps because here there were some small field hospitals, as demonstrated by the three cemeteries where four hundred Italian soldiers had been buried? These old houses had only been sacked and set fire to: the walls were still those of centuries past as were the large larch beams which the fire had only burnt on the surface. For about 30 years now, the seven doors of this hamlet only open when the town dwellers come up to spend their holidays here. The descendants of those who had built the houses with stones dug out of the mountain and with tree trunks chosen from our woods, who had repaired them in 1920, who had begun and ended their lives here, or had left for far away places for work or to fight a war, are all dead. Fires are no lighted in the hearth but, at the weekends, sausages are grilled on the barbecue.
The vegetable patches have become car parks. Even the fountain has been remove: it made it impossible to manoeuvre the cars. Everything has changed. What used to be alive in this house is very far off. It has been left completely empty and full of silence. Here, my classmate was born and lived until her was twenty years old.
