Torpedo Alley or Torpedo Junction off North Caroline,

Is one of the graveyards of the Atlantic Ocean, named for the

High number of attacks on Allied shipping by German U-boats in World War II.

 

Almost 400 ships were sunk and over 5000 people killed.

Twenty-nine Germans from U- _A_ 5 are buried in the Hampton National Cemetery.

 

On July 7, 1942 a Lockheed Hudson aircraft from the US Army 396th

Bombardment Squadron sank a surfaced German submarine with depth charges. 

U - _B_ 01 was the last sinking of a German Submarine in Torpedo Alley.

 

The German submarine U _C_ 52 was destroyed on May 9, 1942 by

the United States Coast Guard cutter ICARUS.

 

On June 15, 1942 the British naval trawler KINGSTON CEYLONITE was sailing

off Virginia Beach in convoy KN-109 and entered a mine field laid by U-701. 

The trawler struck one mine and sank.  Two other tankers and the destroyer

USS BAINBRIDGE (DD- _D_ 46) also hit mines but were saved from sinking.

 

The small American armed trawler USS YP – 38 _E_ was destroyed during a surface action with U-701 on June 19.1942.   Because of a faulty firing pin in the trawler’s

3-inch dual purpose gun, only machine guns and depth charges could be used to defend the ship during the hour and a half battle.

 

U-505 was the first warship to be captured by U.S. forces on the high seas the War of 1812.  U-505 was captured on _F_/04/1944 by U.S. Navy Task Group 22.3 from Norfolk, VA.

 

On April 10, 1942 the British armed trawler SS SAN DELFINO was sank

by seven torpedoes fired from U-20_G_.

 

On January 23, 1942 the British armed tanker SS EMPIRE GEM and the un-armed American merchantman SS VENORE were torpedoed and sank by

U-6_H_.  Survivors were rescued by a motor lifeboat from the

Ocracoke Coast Guard Station.
