Here in the heart of Castile is a very historic place that once was used for a Water Cure (hydrotherapy) Sanitarium to treat chronic diseases by taking lots of baths, drinking lots of water, and getting plenty of outdoor exercise. This Sanitarium was started by Jabez Greene in 1849 and his Daughter Cordelia who earned her teachers certificate at the age of 16, stopped teaching and went to work for her father until she went off to college to earn a medical degree. She returned to Castile when her father died and ran the Sanitarium up until shortly before her death in 1905. She was a very active supporter of temperance and women’s suffrage rights. She never married but did adopt 6 children. Her home became a frequent resting place for many women’s rights activist such as Susan B. Anthony, Francis Willard, and Mary A. Livermore.
Cordelia ‘s niece Dr. Mary T. Greene took over and ran the Sanitarium after Cordelia’s death. After Dr. Mary T. Greene’s death the sanitarium was sold to Samuel Montleone in 1957 who was operating the facility as the Creekside Nursing Home since 1954. This ended 107 years of ownership of this Sanitarium by the Greene family. Eventually the Nursing home was shut down and the patients were moved to other facilities. After the nursing home was closed the building was used for a few years as a dentist’s office, a restaurant, and eventually housed low income tenants until it fell into disrepair.
The Castile Community Club purchased this property and had the building torn down and the site improved to accept their new community club center that now exists there. This is a beautiful structure and is slowly becoming the heart of the community of the Village of Castile. This cache was place with permission from the Castile Community Club and I wish to thank them for allowing me to share this wonderful place with the geocaching community.
Now a little about the cache; This is a 2 part multicache that is well hidden on the Event Center property. The first leg blends in very well with its surroundings, so please be sure to place this back as I have placed it. The final also is well hidden and I ask that you make a good effort to hide this small container back to the way I’ve placed it to keep muggles from spotting it. There are lots of muggle kids around the area so please use good stealth when finding and rehiding this cache. Thanks for visiting this historic place and I hope you enjoyed your visit to the Heart of Castile!
