The Cemeteries Of Titus County - Ft Sherman Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

zoonkai: I was told the same thing. “It was stolen.”

After they told me this... I went and retrieved the container that was still right where I left it.

The state park no longer allows caches without 100’ of a historical monument. I am archiving the cache for this reason. If I can, I will find a new spot later.

Geocache Description:

The Cemeteries of Titus County – Ft Sherman

Here's a list of things we try to always have with us when we go on a caching trip. You should do the same.
Flashlight, needle nose pliers, screwdrivers, camera, tweezers, spare pens, micro log roller, telescoping magnet, swag, mirror, extended grabber, pocket knife, headlamp, and a poking stick. (This is a standard recommendation for this series... You don't need anything more than a pen on MOST of the caches in this series.)
We also like have the PAF (Phone A Friend) & TAF (Text A Friend) options in our toolbox before we head out on a remote cache run. Feel free to email that request to Zoonkai through his Geocaching.com profile page & you will be provided with a cell phone # to add that PAF / TAF option to your toolbox.

Since you've paid your $4 / person entrance fee required to enter the state park, Be sure and grab one or two more caches while you're here.
GC10H6Z / Pooh Bear Cache - GLATTB (Not sure if this one's still here... We heard Yogi Bear & Smoky Bear perished in a fire...)
GC3XFCE / TXGCC13 Lake Bob Sandlin

We never realized that there was a cemetery right here in the state park. It's a very short distance to the playground, so feel free to stop & try out the slide while your there also...

This is a relatively difficult cache...for some. There's always that person that walks right to it... If you know the way that Zoonkai & Redicer think then this little buggar probably won't stump you too bad.

PLEASE RETURN THE CACHE TO ITS HIDING SPOT EXACTLY AS YOU FOUND IT. If we had wanted it to be super easy, we would’ve hidden it that way.

No Spoilers in your logs please! (We may encrypt or delete logs containing spoiler details.)

Please respectful of your surroundings while searching all caches, particularly ones in cemeteries like this series. NO NIGHT CACHING!!

Congratulations to the following cachers who have completed this entire series!!

Ft Sherman Cemetery
This cemetery is located in the Southwest part of Titus County in what is now the Bob Sandlin State Park. A chain link fence surrounds the cemetery and the state maintenance has placed it in a very fine condition. It could be the oldest cemetery in the county, as some of the earliest settlement took place in this region in the 1830s. Old Fort Sherman, from which the cemetery derives its name, was established nearby in 1839. It is impossible to now determine the number of graves that might be enclosed by the large perimeter fence since the elements and development removed much of the indicators.

To reach the Ft. Sherman Cemetery from the Titus county court house, take West 1st street west for 0.5 miles to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Proceed straight through the intersection, the designation will be FM 127. After 10.7 miles FM 127 intersects with FM 21 in the Blodgett community. Veer left at the stop sign for FM 21 and proceed 1.0 mile to the entrance to Bob Sandlin State Park on the left. Turn left onto the Park Road and continue for 0.4 miles to an intersecting Park Road. Turn right at the stop sign for 0.5 mile. Turn right into the parking lot area. The cemetery lies 0.1 mile on the right. Adequate parking and an entrance gate to the cemetery are there. Coordinates: 33°02.901'N 095°005.603'W

Miller Cemetery
The Miller cemetery most likely derived its name from those that were were buried there and yet it is also called Ft. Sherman Cemetery. Located in the Soutwestern part of Titus County, about 14 miles out of Mt. Pleasant on the F.W. Benson Survey. It is about 200 yards East of FM Highway 21. This is probably one of the oldest cemeteries in Titus County as there were people living in that area in the early 1830's. It is only a short distance from Old Fort Sherman, which was established in 1839. There are now only two monuments - to T. H. Miller and Wife. There are Scotts, Benson, Millers and other families buried in this cemetery.

See the Ft. Sherman Cemetery for further information
