Geocache Description:

M4 Sherman

Tak jak T-34 był legendą w armii radzieckiej, tak M4 Sherman był legendą w siłach aliantów. Czołg zadebiutował na froncie jesienią 1942 roku w bitwie pod El-Alamein. O ile niemieckie czołgi PzKpfw III czy IV stanowiły równorzędnych rywali, to Tygrysy czy Pantery radziły sobie z Shermanami bezlitośnie. Słaby pancerz, wysoka sylwetka i nienajlepsze działo działały na niekorzyść Shermanów w starciach z tymi czołgami. Liczne wady Shermanów były jednak niwelowane ich liczba, gdzie przewaga liczebna była barfzo często stosowaną taktyką - często w stosunku 5 do 1. Czołgi M4 Sherman doskonale natomiast sprawowały się na frontach Pacyfiku, gdzie miały przewagę nad czołgami konstrukcji japońskiej. Na wszystkich frontach II wojny światowej pojawiło się ponad 48 tysięcy Shermanów. Uzbrojenie M4 stanowiły początkowo działa 75mm, a od 1944 roku 76 mm. Niektóre egzemplarze zostały wyposażone w haubicę 105 mm, a w wersji brytyjskiej czołgu - działo siedemnastofuntowe. Załogę stanowiło pięciu czołgistów. Czołgi M4 Sherman były produkowane do 1945 roku.

As the T-34 tank was a legend in soviet army, the M4 Sherman was legendary in the allied forces likewise. Tank has debuted on the front in autumn, 1942, in the El-Alamein battle. German tanks PzKpfw III and IV were an equal opponent for Shermans, but Tigers and Panthers were ruthless for them. Weak armour, high profile and not the best gun - all were the Sherman drawbacks in confrontations with those tanks. Numerous flaws have been balanced by M4 Sherman's numbers, where outnumbering the enemy was valid, often used tactic - and often it was 5-to-1 ratio. In the same time, M4 Sherman tanks have no equals on the Pacific fronts, where the japanesee tanks were badly inferior to Shermans. On all world war II theatres of war, more than 48 thousands of Shermans have appeared. M4 Sherman was armed with, at first 75mm gun, and since 1944 - 76mm gun. Some units have 105mm howitzer installed, and british version has 17-pounder gun installed. Crew consisted of 5 man. M4 Sherman has been produced till 1945.

D = Sum of the digits in the serial number of the tank with registration number T-224875, which starred in the "Fury" movie
E = M4A1 Engine power in horsepower
F = T41 tracks width in inches
G = Sum of the letter values in the series name of the radios installed in M4 Sherman tanks [A=1..Z=26]
