Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Tiffany Falls Earthcache. A special thanks to the Hamilton Conservation Authorty for allowing this cache to be conducted on their property. Parking has been waypointed, but please note, there is a fee to access it.

The posted coordinates will bring you to a lookout that contains an information board. Using information from this board, the cache page, and from your observations on site, please answer the questions below and email them to me.

The Tiffany Falls area is an Environmentally Significant Area in the glacial Dundas Valley on the Niagara Escarpment and represents a distinctive landform within Ontario. Apart from having many geological features, this area provides habitat for rare or endangered species that are endangered Regionally, Provincially, or Nationally. This area serves an invaluable ecological function, and links the Niagara Escarpment and the Dundas Valley natural area.

The central feature of this area is Tiffany Falls, which is a gorgeous 21m high waterfall.

The escarpment exposure at Tiffany Falls represents the stratigraphic sequence from the upper Grimsby Formation, to the Lockport Formation. A variety of lithologies (including sandstone, shale, limestone, and dolostone) are exposed in these outcrops. These are all of the Siluarian age. A much more in depth discussion of these geological units can be found here.

Tiffany Falls is located within a V-shaped ravine containing steep talus slopes crowned by an open carbonate cliff rim community. The cliffs are mainly comprised of unvegetated exposed bedrock topped by mature trees rooted in the talus slopes. J-shaped trees can also be observed on the steep walls of the gorge.

Please email me the answers to the following questions:

1. What type of waterfall is Tiffany Falls classified as?
2. What are two escarpment formations that are observable, and identify one characteristic of each.
3. When looking towards the North along the trail, and NW across the creek, describe the shape of the thin trees, both along the creek, and further up the slopes.
4. Post as many pictures as you want, especially of the Falls! (optional)

All found it logs that are not accompanied by an email will be deleted.

Congratulations to JRholmes77 on the FTF!
