The Great Southern of Spain Railway Ltd (GSSR) was a railway company situated mostly in the Province of Almería. It was built by a British Company in the 1880s but although the line survived for 100 years, British interest ceased with the seizing of the line in 1936 (The start of the Spanish Civil War).
Purchena station opened on 11 June 1894, it had a branch line to the Talc Mine at Somontin 2km to the north, and it also serviced the kaolin and marble industry. The station was closed on January 1, 1985 and for many years was in a poor condition until it was renovated and transformed into a restaurant in 2007.
