Located approximately 32km north of Townsville and about 5km from the highway, Toolakea is a quiet beach, seldom visited by anyone but locals. It’s a great place to stop for a picnic lunch, or to try your luck wetting a line. While the beach itself stretches for 8km, access is limited outside the two kilometers of the community.
Just back from the beach, there is a day use park with free barbeques, toilets and play equipment for kids. Although this park is well maintained, and the grass is always green, it is rarely busy.
If you’re looking to stay for more than just a few hours, head to the nearby Bluewater Park. Opposite the turnoff on the highway, it has free camping beside its shady recreational area. Here you’ll find barbeques, toilets, showers, and playgrounds. The park is right next to Bluewater creek, which, at the right time of year, can be a nice spot for a swim.
If you believe the locals, a pair of lagoons used to sit behind the beach. Unfortunately, due to shifting sands or whatever processes, these “lakes” have long since disappeared. While the lakes may be gone, their legacy remains with the name of the beach “Two lakes here” has evolved to the current Toolakea. ;)
The cache itself is a 500g Peanut Butter jar, but it is concealed in another, more indigenous, container. GZ is very near a beach access car park, making this an easy park and grab.
At the time of placement the cache contained:
A logbook and pencil, Fishing bobby cork (float), Koala keychain/bottle opener, Kangaroo keychain/bottle opener, "Booth" - Travelfish geocoin, Seahorse magnet, Ice-cream eraser.
