Geocache Description:

Easy grab on a seldom used industrial/farm road.

This cache is meant to highlight one of the highest non-building structures in the tri-state area. The locals call it "Cape Canaveral" but in actuality it is a massive high-capacity kiln used by Lehigh Portland Cement Company in the production of Portland Cement, which is the most common type of cement. The kiln, which began regular operation in 2001 is considered the most highly technological in North America and greatly reduces the noise and pollutants produced in standard kilns. When it is operating, you can see the flocks of eagles and buzzards hitching a ride on the heat column high above the tower. Lehigh Portland Cement Company has been in continuous operation since 1910 and is a major local employer. Each day, many tons of finished cement leave the plant by truck for local destinations and by train to hubs in Baltimore and Pennsylvania where it is then transported all over the globe. Lehigh is in the process of a major expansion with a new quarry south on Clemsonville Road and another proposed quarry near New Windsor. While this road is mostly used by Lehigh traffic you may encounter some local muggles. There is ample shoulder parking but please use the standard cautions with kids. Bring your own pen and marvel at the view !! You can almost see the Space Shuttle taking off from it !
