Geocache Description:

This should be another easy find - terrain rating is if you hike/bike from coords given below. Placed on the Redbank Valley Trails with permission. This rail trail is PA's 2014 Trail of the Year and is open dawn to dusk. The trail surface has been refinished & trail is open, but workers are still doing construction on sewer plant buildings near the trail on both sides of this cache so stay alert on workdays (as of Dec, 2014).

Members of the RVTA uncovered this old turntable near Oak Ridge in Oct, 2013. It is about 120' north of the cache - toward Brookville. All that remains are a few circular pieces of concrete and a concrete center piece. There is also a set of train wheels setting to the side by the trail - not sure if they are off a train car or were part of the turntable system. Turntables were used to turn engines around so they could proceed back down the tracks in the opposite direction. I really couldn't find any history on this specific turntable, but assume there was some kind of station in this area at one time also. I know there were coal mines in the area and the coal was transported out by train. Maybe there was a passenger depot here also? Or was it just up the track in Hawthorn? If anybody has any info, please forward it to me & I'll include it here. Thanks.

Across the trail and just a bit to the north is the original concrete marker for Milepost 23. It is one of only a few left along the trail.

For you benchmark hunters, there is one on the bridge over Oak Ridge Road just down the trail about .1 mi. to the south (toward New Bethlehem). It is MA1008 (X-92) and is a round survey disk set in the abutment. You can see it from the bridge.

Congratulations to hbowser for FTF!
