NOTE: This cache is Revision 1 of the Cold War Cache by lex3001 in 2010. Apparently the CO is mia, so since it was archived yesterday by a reviewer, and since I had already put a throwdown here, this is now a new cache. The log has a new spot for FTF.
The text description is almost exactly the words of the original CO. The only thing changed is in the first line having to do with the parking area, and the last lines saying what items were in the original cache.
Park hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parking lot gate closes at 5 p.m.
A micro cache on Wildcat Canyon "Parkway", a short way up the paved road in the new Alvarado paking area.
Years ago I used to go on long runs throughout Wildcat Canyon park and I often wondered what some of the strange cement structures were in the remote parts of the park -- and also why some of the trails were paved roads. This cache is along one of the paved trails that used to be a road.
Well it turns out that in the 40s and 50s there was a program called the Nike Missile System and apparently there were two missile bases complete with bunkers ready to blast soviet bombers out of the air should they make it over this far. According to some website I found on the Internet (yes, everything you read on the Internets is true) the two in Wildcat Canyon have been obliterated.
Nowadays you'll instead find eucalyptus trees, fennel plants, butterflies, cows, wild rabbits, the occasional snake or coyote, lizards, frogs, and any number of other creatures of nature here. If you hike up high enough, the views are spectacular.
