Magnetic Rock trail is most easily done as an in and out hike. To get to the 60 foot rock with strong magnetic attraction you'll need to hike approximately 1.5 miles one way, a 3 mile round trip hike. You'll hike across Larch Creek and through area that was affected by the 1999 blowdown, a prescribed burn in 2002 and the Ham Lake wildfire in 2007. This has exposed beautiful bedrock along the trail. The geocache is located about a ten to fifteen minute walk from the trail head. You'll have a great view of the meadow below and in the distance the Gunflint Trail when you're at the geocache location. It's a standard plastic geocache container.
There is a picnic table and latrine at the trail head for your convenience and if the blueberries are in season you'll really enjoy this hike. Use caution when the trail is wet as the rocks can be slippery. When the sun is out be sure to bring along water because there isn't much shade along the way.
If you're interested in making a longer loop trail then find a map or ask a local for directions across country to the Gunflint Narrows Road and back out to the Gunflint Trail.
