Vikingenes gud Odin, er en forfigur for den moderne julenissen. Ifølge myten red Odin en flygende hest, Sleipnir (en forfigur for julenissens reinsdyr) som hadde 8 bein. Om vinteren gav Odin ut både gaver og straff, og barna fylte sokkene eller støvlene sine opp med godbiter til Sleipnir.
