For my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I will be placing 27 caches throughout Hunterdon County, NJ. Hunterdon County celebrated its 300th Anniversary in 2014. (The Gold Award is the highest award that can be earned in Girl Scouts).
This series GS GA/TC: (Girl Scout Gold Award/Tri-Centennial), when complete, will consist of Alexandria, Bethlehem, Bloomsbury, Califon, Town of Clinton, Clinton Township, Delaware, East Amwell, Flemington, Franklin, Frenchtown, Glen Gardner, Hampton, High Bridge, Holland, Kingwood, Lambertville, Lebanon Borough, Lebanon Township, Milford, Raritan, Readington, Stockton, Tewksbury, Union, West Amwell and Caching For The Gold. There is no set order or any clues to collect.
The borough of Glen Gardner totals 1.524 square miles. The area that is now Glen Gardner had been known as Eveland for tavern keeper John Eveland who established a tavern here in 1760 and operated it for over 100 years by three generations of Evelands. Glen Gardener was also called Sodom. It was rumored that the name Sodom came about after a wandering evangelist, angered by either a lack of response from his listeners or the smallness of the donation in the collection plate referred to the area as Sodom and sinful. Locals used the name in jest, but even in 1871, some persisted with the name. Later, both the community and post office were officially changed to Glen Gardner in 1871 in honor of five Gardner brothers who owned a chair and frame factory in the area.
The cache is a P&G. Watch for muggles, be stealthy!
