Geocache Description:

Ajdovščina se imenuje predel Ljubljane/Ajdovščina is the area in the center of Ljubljana

In ancient and medieval times, the area was located outside the city walls. At the time of Roman Emona is there a necropolis as well as the meeting point of two of the most important Roman roads in this area, namely Emona-Celeia and link to Gorenjsko (today Celovska road). As a result, the area has also become one of the most important centers or promestnih. intersecting points in Ljubljana (and Slovenia), as this is where cross connections with Styria and Gorenjsko.
The year 1657 represented a turning point in this area, since they settled here Discalced Augustinians (diskalceati), who also founded his monastery. In the immediate vicinity are built then the Poor Clares Monastery. Augustinian monastery is best known for the fact that it worked Marko Pohlin (author of Kranjska grammar) and Damascen Dev (the editor of the first three Slovenian poetry almanacs Pisanize of lepeh art).

In 1784, Emperor Joseph II. abolished the monastery. On his initiative, then in 1786 the monastery was converted into a provincial civil hospital, the first civilian hospital in Slovenian; the latter is here operated until 1895. [3]. In the hospital, where he worked as the city morgue, after drowning brought the corpse of Matija Čop. The monastery sick-building was the earthquake of that year so badly damaged that it had to be demolished. At the same location then built two Art Nouveau building: at the corner of the street stands Dalmatin building from 1906, which was designed by Ciril Metod Koch, while on the Slovenian road building stands Maks Fabiani from the years 1902-05. [1]

As a very busy area in the later time Ajdovščina area became more restaurants: Restaurant Figovec, Tavčarjeva house ... In the middle of 1693 Ajdovščine a wooden plague column st. Trinity, whose manufacture has enabled the prince Herbart Auersperg; They are designed in 1722 replaced with a stone. The latter was in 1927 due to enlargement of the tram network moved on Congress Square.

In addition to the junction Slovenian and Gosposvetska roads here today is an underpass Ajdovščina, which takes place under the Slovenian road.
