Geocache Description:

Spirit Quest - Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery - History Walk.

This is a easy multi-cache located in the old section of the cemetery. As with any cemetery cache please be respectful of the grounds and any possible mourners or visitors that might not understand what we are doing. The cemetery is open for visitors dawn until dusk or 8PM whichever is earlier.

For this Spirit Quest cache, you will need to visit three graves, and gather information from them, in order to find the final. This cache is intended to be easy and straight forward.

Please Note: As of 1933, there is NO access to the cache directly from Lincoln Street / US 101. You will need to drive into the cemetery from the entrance on Sunset Drive. I have included a reference point to the entrance of the cemetery, that you can put in your GPS, or for those that prefer, the written directions are as follows. From US 101 take Grand Avenue to the West for approximately 0.3 miles to the tee in the road, turn the tight right corner onto Sunset Drive, you will be at the cemetery entrance in less than 0.1 miles.

This is intended to be a simple multi-cache in the Sunset Memorial park cemetery. Those of you who have done other caches of mine in the Spirit Quest series might notice that this is the first and so far the only Multi-cache in the series. For this cache, you will need to park your car at the parking coordinates and walk to the three waypoints and the final. We are talking a couple hundred feet over slightly sloped grassy terrain. From the last waypoint to the final you will walk partway down the original cemetery entrance road. The final is located just off of that old road. Also the posted coordinates are the same as waypoint #1.

History

In 1933 the City of Hoquiam purchased the Sunset Memorial Park. The mayor Truman Kellogg felt that the cemetery was in poor shape, so he set about having the grounds repaired, headstones restored and cemetery roads repaired. The biggest change to the roads was a new entrance. The original entrance shot straight up the hill from Lincoln street (now US-101). This route was steep, and had proven to be difficult for horses and nearly impossible for the 1933 modern day car to get up. His thinking was that more and more people would own cars in the future and so he had the cemetery entrance re-routed to it's current location off the end of Sunset drive. There were also over 500 trees planted around the cemetery at this time, all of them were donated by Polson logging company. Mayor Truman also put several new policies in place regarding the cemetery, one of which is that everyone plot in the cemetery would receive the same quality of care regardless of the financial standing of the person interned.

Albert Johnson is interned in this cemetery, he was a US congressman elected to serve Washington's 2nd and 3rd districts, he served from 1913 to 1933.

Please note the cemetery is open for visitors from dawn until dusk or 8pm whichever is earlier. Please limit your search to visiting hours only. NO night caching or skateboarding allowed.. While you are here please take your time and look around, and enjoy all of the history here, but remember to be respectful, since the cemetery is still active it is possible that there could be mourners or other visitors that might not understand what we are doing. This is a multi-cache located in the old section of the cemetery, while you will visit a few graves for information, the final and only physical container is located we away from any graves. The final and only physical container is a regular sized Lock-N-Lock container.

Congratulations goes to K7DA & Zookeeper98 for Co-first to Find!!!!!
